prenatal care information from san diego midwife
Services - Prenatal Care
Jamin and La Shel can provide complete prenatal care throughout your pregnancy. They make prenatal care visits occur every four weeks up to 28 weeks, every two weeks from 28 to 36 weeks, and once a week until your baby’s birth.
Studies have shown that the more you know and trust your midwife or caregiver, the better prepared you’ll be for labor.
Your first visit generally lasts about two hours. During this most important first visit, they will discuss your medical history, conduct a complete physical examination, and provide nutrition, lifestyle and exercise advice for a healthy pregnancy. The follow-up visits usually last about one hour.
Urine testing for protein and glucose presence, weight check, blood pressure reading, fundal height measurement and fetal auscultation and palpation (for position and activity) are routinely done at each visit.
All laboratory work can be completed by the midwives, including but not limited to:
- Complete blood count (cbc).
- Blood type and Rh factor.
- RPR screening (blood test for syphilis).
- Rubella antibody titre.
- Urinalysis.
- Pap smear.
- Genetic screening.
- HIV screening.
- Gonorrhea and Chlamydia cultures.
- Glucose screening (26-28 weeks).
- Group B streptococcus culture (near term).
- Ultrasounds are available throughout the pregnancy.
At 36 weeks, they will conduct a complete prenatal care visit at your home. They will review birth supplies and discuss the chain of events leading up to your home birth.
Throughout your pregnancy, labor and delivery and postpartum care, you will have decisions to make regarding medical procedures and tests. Jamin and La Shel will help insure you’re informed and educated every step of the way.
