Prenatal Care

Jamin, Chrisi, and La Shel provide complete prenatal care throughout your pregnancy.  You will meet with them for prenatal care visits every four weeks up to 28 weeks, every two weeks from 28 to 36 weeks, and once a week until your baby’s birth. Studies have shown that the more you know and trust your midwife or caregiver, the better prepared you’ll be for labor.

Your first visit generally lasts about one hour. During this important first visit, they will discuss your medical history, conduct a complete physical examination, and provide nutrition, lifestyle and exercise advice for a healthy pregnancy. The follow-up visits usually last about a half of an hour. At each visit they will check your weight, blood pressure, urine for protein and glucose, fundal height measurement  and fetal auscultation and palpation (for position and activity). Education, empowerment and inclusion truly set midwifery care apart.  The midwives love when siblings and family members are involved in the prenatal visits.

All laboratory work can be completed by the midwives, including but not limited to:

    • Complete blood count (CBC)
    • Blood type and Rh factor
    • Rubella antibody titre
    • Urinalysis
    • Pap smear
    • Genetic screening
    • HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis screening
    • Gonorrhea and Chlamydia cultures
    • Glucose screening
    • Thyroid and hormone testing
    • Vitamin D
    • Group B streptococcus culture (near term)
  • Ultrasounds are available throughout the pregnancy

All of your labs, ultrasounds and records are charted using a secure, online system and are available to you at any time.  San Diego Midwife believes in transparency and that you should have an active role in your own care.

At 36 weeks, they will conduct a complete prenatal care visit at your home or Babies in Bloom Birth Center.  They will review birth supplies and discuss the sequence of events leading up to your home birth.

Throughout your pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum care, you will have decisions to make regarding medical procedures and tests. Your midwives will help insure you are informed and educated every step of the way.

"The reasons I chose them were important, but what was really important was the relationships I built with them throughout my pregnancy. They were always there for me, they never sounded put out by a random late night call when I was worried about something, or very early morning calls when labor started and I just wanted to check in."
