Birth & Postpartum Doula

About Birth & Postpartum Doula Services

The word ‘doula’ comes from the Greek word for the most important female slave or servant in an ancient Greek household, the woman who probably helped the lady of the house through her childbearing (DONA International) and has come to mean “woman caregiver for another woman”.

By the second trimester you may have already chosen a birth location and a primary care provider with whom you feel comfortable. This is where doula services can help guide, support and nurture you through a drug free, natural labor and delivery in a hospital setting.

Your doula will meet with you for several prenatal visits prior to your due date to help plan for the birth and discuss questions you might have. Because of their unique and extensive medical backgrounds and experience, your doula can help you make wise decisions regarding medical interventions such as if and when to be induced, the use of pitocin, epidurals, etc…

Your doula can help you create your birth plan which you will give to your doctor and the hospital staff on call on the day of your labor. They will be with you at home during labor (prior to going to the hospital).

The benefits of doulas have been shown in fourteen controlled trials in several countries, and the results have been reported in highly respected publications such as, the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association. Women reported more positive evaluations of the birth experience and felt more relaxed during labor when they received continuous and experienced woman-to-woman support.

We additionally offer postpartum doula services.
